How we use Purification Essential Oil

So this series that I've been doing will probably take me a YEAR to get through at the rate I'm going!

By the end of the series, I'll have a post on each of the oils that come in Young Living's Premium Starter Kit, which is the Everyday Oils Collection plus our Stress Away Oil.

Today I'm going to talk about our Purification essential oil blend.

I really love this oil and for several different reasons.

Purification is made up of the following oils:
  • Citronella
  • Lemongrass
  • Rosemary
  • Melaleuca Alternifolia
  • Lavandin
  • Myrtle

This oils smells lovely!  It almost has a rosy fragrance to it.  Very fresh and clean.  I always use it when I make my carpet deodorizer.

Here are some ways we use Purification:

Eliminate Odors
Purification is actually formulated to eliminate/neutralize (not mask or cover) odors and the bacteria that causes them.  It's a really great option if you have pet, smoke, or mildew odors in your home!

Diffusing Purification will leave your room smelling divine very quickly.

Another option, if you don't have a diffuser is putting Purification on a cotton ball and putting it in the air vents.

I also put several drops of Purification in a small glass spray bottle with a tiny bit of epsom salts to dissolve it.  Then I fill with water - makes a great air freshener!  Just make sure to shake the bottle before spraying to disperse the oils throughout.

Ward off BUGS!
The oils in Purification make a great combination to keep bugs away!

Diffuse it anywhere you want to ward off mosquitos, flies, or bees.

You can also simply put several drops in some coconut oil to rub onto skin before going outside.

Another option is using it in a spray bottle like I mentioned above and spraying it all over clothing and skin.

But if you want more of a heavy duty bug repellant, follow this recipe:
Mix all the above in a 6oz glass spray bottle.
Shake well before using.

**If you don't have all these oils, just use what you DO have!  Other options to add to your bug repellant are Clove, Idaho Tansy, and Citronella.

Calm bug bites/stings
If you do get bug bites or stings, Purification can really help calm the itching, burning, and stinging, especially when applied right away.

I have ALWAYS been a mosquito magnet...for as long as I can remember.  And the bites always have swelled up and been extremely itchy for several days.

Well, not anymore!  As SOON as I feel the itch of a mosquito bite, I put a drop of Purification on it.  Within minutes, the itch is gone and so is the swelling.  Anytime it feels like it might be itching again, I reapply and it's relieved!

The same applies for other types of bites and stings.  The earlier you catch it the better!

Support the body's natural defenses with skin irritation and blemishes.
The oils in this blend are also great for supporting healing!  I grab Purification and apply a drop to any scrapes to assist the healing process!

Also swipe a drop over any blemishes/pimples you might have and see how helpful it can be! (don't rub it in too much.  You don't want the oils of your fingers touching the pimple, just the essential oil)

Boost the immune system
Purification is great for the immune system, make sure to have it close when you need to promote's the body's defenses!

Rub a drop on each foot and dilute some on a q-tip and swab right inside your nose when needing extra immune support.

Try it as a deoderant!
There are many oils that can be used as a personal deodorant.  This is my oil of choice.  It smells so fresh and clean and can be helpful when there is bacteria that causes  odor under your arms.

I simply apply one drop each to the underarms each day!  I keep several oils with me wherever I go and this is one of them.  So I always have it if I need to reapply!
***This is NOT an anti-perspirant.  There are several health related reasons I choose not to use underarm anti-perspirant anymore!

Help alleviate ear discomfort
Purification, Melrose, or Melaleuca are the oils I grab when someone has some discomfort in their ear and/or jaaw.

MAKE SURE never to put essential oils directly into the ear.  Take a drop (diluted for kiddos) and gently massage along the front of the ear and down the jawline.  Do the same behind the ear as well.

Additionally, you can put some diluted Purification on a cotton ball and place the cotton ball right over the ear opening.  Hold it there for as long as possible. (some people tape it there!)  This can be super helpful!

There are SO many ways to use Purification, I try to never be without it!

How we use PanAway Essential Oil

On to the 4th post in my essential oils series.  We're going through each oil in the Premium Starter Kit and how we use them in our home!

However, each family uses them in their own way and will find different uses!  We find new ways to apply them every day :)

So Young Living's PanAway blend has the following oils in it:

  • Wintergreen - Warming, soothing for tension and muscle soreness
  • Helichrysum - Helpful with muscle tension or other discomfort
  • Clove principal constituent is eugenol, which is used in the dental industry to numb the gums
  • Peppermint - Very cooling when applied topically and can be very soothing!

It was formulated by Gary Young after a severe injury to the ligaments in his leg!  Yes, it works THAT well!

PanAway is a powerful blend of 4 very powerful oils!!

We absolutely love the smell and the topical results we feel!

Here is how we use it!

Occasional head discomfort due to tension
Pretty sure I've mentioned more than once that I have always dealt with headaches and was SO thankful to find relief with essential oils!

Most of the time, Peppermint will do the trick, but for a bad headache I know I need something a little stronger!

So for headaches, I rub a drop of PanAway into my temples, forehead, neck, and even shoulders!

If I need extra help, I'll follow that with Peppermint, which will really drive it in as well as intensify the effects of the PanAway.

Minor Leg Pain
I get aches in my legs occasionally that my mother tells me are from my varicose veins that The Lord allowed me to inherit from her ;)

Anyway, my entire leg will get very sore from my thigh, all the way down through my calf.

At the first sign, I'll grab PanAway and simply rub it into my legs!!  I rub it into the area that I feel the pain is more concentrated in.

When covering a larger area, it's really beneficial to use a carrier oil, so I usually apply it with coconut oil.

Occasional Aches in Back after Excercise
PanAway is really effective in soothing my back discomfort.

Whether it's my lower back from sitting or standing too long, or my side from holding my 20 pounder for too long, when I'm sore I'll grab PanAway.

Simply rub a few drops into the sore area.  I love the cooling effect of it!

In fact, one night I applied some to my back right before I went to sleep.  I didn't bother turning the light on, and apparently I put several drops in my hand because my back felt VERY cool after a couple minutes!

Stiff Neck
Same goes for the neck.  Put a few drops on and rub in real well whenever you're sore!

Supporting Normal Healing
So I have a story for this one.

My 4 year old got smacked in the face, RIGHT above her eye with the corner of a door a few months back.

It literally THREW her on her back.  It hit her hard.  She was in tears and there was an immediate vertical bruise on her head in the shape of the corner of the door.

I felt so bad.  And on top of the pain and the terrible looking bruise, it was actually my fault that she got hit!

Anyway, as SOON as we got home, just 5 minutes or so later, I applied PanAway to her bruise that was already blue and super swollen.

Yes...I took a picture

I rubbed only 1/2 a drop in twice right before bed.  I made sure to ask her if it felt too cold or sensitive.  If this happened, I would have just layered coconut oil over it, but it didn't!

So the next morning, she woke up and the girl had no bruise.  No swelling.  Was no longer blue.

She didn't feel any pain after that!

I was amazed!

Several days later, the spot did turn a little yellow for a day and then left!

I've since had more success using PanAway healing these kind of issues...needless to say, anytime someone gets a big bonk, we grab it!!

Monthly Cramps
I think most women reading can relate to this one!

When I've got cramps, I have a few different oils to choose from, actually!

And one way to relieve the cramps is to apply PanAway to the abdomen and cover with a warm compress.

Muscle Aches
When the muscles are sore after excercise, application of PanAway can definitely help relieve the pain!

It's really just as complicated as the other ways that we use it....we take a few drops out and rub it into the affected area!

Young Living has several oils that assist in soothing common discomforts and they've chosen to put this one in the Premium Starter Kit!  Such a great value!!

I absolutely love PanAway and I'm nursing along the last of this bottle!  I'd hate to be out of it! ;)

I can't stress enough how thankful we are that we can make better decisions regarding our family's health.  We are no longer reaching for PILLS!  We are reaching for our oils :)

If you haven't tried using essential oils yet, please contact me.  I'd be glad to give you a sample of something that might help you in whatever area you need help with.

I am loving this journey toward wellness and a more natural lifestyle!!

How we use Lemon Essential Oil

Continuing in my Young Living Essential Oil series, I'll talk about another oil that I LOVE.

Lemon!

Lemon essential oil actually is cold pressed (most oils are distilled) from the rinds of lemons.

YL's Lemon Essential Oil is so concentrated, it takes 75 lemons to get one 15ml bottle of lemon essential oil!!!

Lemon oil is

It is very invigorating and refreshing!

Lemon consists of 68 percent dlimonene, a powerful antioxidant.

I love alot of YL's citrus oils because they are cheap because they are super versatile!

And here's how we use Lemon:

Good Morning!

I love to start the day with a glass of lemon water.  Before drinking anything else!  I just put a drop or two in my glass...and add water.  Really scientific...it's like my own little chemistry lab. (remember to ONLY use glass!)

Goodbye Toxins!

So, when you put a drop of Lemon EO in your water, and you haven't done this before, please be near a restroom that evening :)

Lemon has a way of stimulating the digestive system and assisting the body in it's own natural detox process, so make sure you're drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

This process is good!  Just warning ya!

Boost your Immune System!

To go along with getting rid of toxins, YL Lemon Essential Oil will also assist the body in stimulating the immune system.

So when I really need a boost to my body's natural defenses (something yucky is going around), I take the following capsule several times each day!

5 Drops of Thieves
3 Drops of Oregano
2 Drops of Frankincense (if I can afford it ;)
2 Drops of Lemon

Loosen Phlegm

Yea, no one really likes phlegm...or likes the word phlegm. But drinking your glass of Lemon water will also help to reduce mucous!  So if you have issues with that, make sure to keep Lemon a part of your routine and support your lungs and sinuses!

Balance PH

So another benefit of drinking your lemon water is that it can balance the ph in your body.  So if it's off due to eating too much sugar, starch, or other acidic foods, make sure to add lemon water to your morning routine!

Keep up your Metabolism

By taking a capsule of Lemon and Peppermint essential oils every morning (right before that glass of lemon water), you can really help kick start your metabolism!  I lost a couple pounds by doing this and nothing else!
If you haven't taken oils in capsule form before, start with one drop of each and work your way up to 3-4 drops of each oil.

Clean!!!!

*Lemon is a natural disinfectant!  So add Lemon to a glass spray bottle and add some water and clean the counters!  It'll clean and make it smell super fresh!

*You can also add it to vinegar if you use that to clean instead.

*Another option is to add a few drops of Lemon EO to a cup of baking soda in a canister or jar. Mix well, then use it as you would comet cleaner!  I use it to clean my ceramic sinks!

*You can also make a great DIY "Soft Scrub" cleaner!
Mix the following ingredients in a jar.  It should be the consistency of a soft paste.

  • 3/4C Baking Soda
  • 1/4C liquid Castile Soap (Mine is made from this tutorial)
  • 1TBS water
  • 1TBS Vinegar
  • 5-10 drops Lemon Essential Oil

*Use Lemon Essential Oil to make your own carpet deodorizer like I shared in this post.

Spot-Treat Blemishes

I haven't tried this yet, but I know a lot of people use YL Lemon Essential oil to help with occasional blemishes.  Just use a tiny bit as a spot treatment, but AVOID SUNLIGHT afterwards!  Lemon is photosensitive...it will react with sunlight.

Goo Gone!

I have used Lemon EO to remove tough labels on just about anything!  I swear it works way better than Goo Gone!

I have also heard that you can even use it to remove sticky residue from clothing...make sure to do a patch test first though.

Refresh

All citrus oils are known for their ability to refresh the mind.  When you need a "pick-me-up," simply place a couple drops in your palm, rub your hands together, and then cup them over your nose to inhale it.  Take several deep breaths and you'll notice a difference!

Diffusing Lemon EO will also work great for this purpose!

As with all our oils, we find new ways to use them every day!

Please remember that these recommendations are ONLY for Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils.

How We Use Peppermint Essential Oil

Moving on with my essential oils series, I'll talk about how we use Peppermint essential oil!

I LOOOOOVE Peppermint

I know I will say this about lots of oils.  Aaaannndd that's because I love essential oils :)

But peppermint was one of the very first oils I used and saw immediate results with it.

I blogged about how to support your immune system with essential oils a few months ago, and that was the first time I had used it.  You can read that post here.

Young Living's Peppermint essential oil is prettttty darn strong.  If you get the stuff anywhere near your eyes, just beware!  The aroma of peppermint close to the eyes can make them sting and water.  If you get ANY of it IN the actual eye, they will water and water and water...and sting.

So.

When using YL Peppermint, please be careful when using it near the eyes!

Their peppermint is so strong because they only use the oil from the first distillation.

(As they do for the rest of their oils as well)

Alot of other peppermint essential oils that you'll find were bottled after being distilled for sometimes even two or three times!

This is where you get a sweeter, more peppermint candy type of aroma.  The more a plant is distilled, the sweeter the oil will be in many cases.

Young Living's peppermint smells beautiful!  It is a strong minty aroma with a very tiny hint of sweetness, but not candy-like.

(btw.  If someone tells you that an oil is more pure because it smells sweeter, please don't go by that logic.  Everyone smells different!  Does everyone love the scent of peppermint?  No.  Does everyone love the smell of Ylang Ylang?  No...but I DO!  Testing is what tells you how pure an oil is, not just a quick sniff test.)

  • Peppermint has a long history of being used as a digestive stimulant and can also help curb your appetite!

  • It is one of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion, it may also restore digestive efficiency.

  • Jean Valnet MD studied peppermint's supportive effect on the liver and respiratory systems. Other scientists have also researched peppermint's role in improving taste and smell when inhaled

  • Dr. William N. Dember of the University of Cincinnati studied peppermint's ability to improve concentration and mental sharpness.

And here are just some ways that I have learned to use peppermint essential oil.

Sinuses!!

I have dealt with pain due to sinus pressure for as long as I can remember.  I have lived on a combination of Motrin, Tylenol, Excedrin, and Sudafed during all major weather changes since the age of about 9.  I've just always had them, and they are the worst when it's raining.

As I mentioned in one of my earlier oil posts, my constant use of pain relievers led me to having gastritis!  THAT was painful and I had to completely remove all ibuprofen, aspirin, caffeine, and tomato based foods out of my diet for a month in order for my stomach lining to heal....and sadly...it was very hard for me to live without the Excedrin...because of my HEADACHES!

So I LOVE peppermint for my sinus issues.  Anytime I feel sinus pressure, I rub a drop of peppermint into the area....bridge of the nose, forehead, temples, and cheeks (avoid the eyes!)

If I've got a full-on headache, I'll rub it into my neck and shoulders as well.

Awesome thing about essential oils....ya can't really overdose!  So if the pressure remains after 30 minutes or so...REAPPLY!

Also applying to the bottoms of the feet (especially helpful for a little one) can assist this!

Occasional pain due to tension

This is a little bit of a repeat of above...but even if your headache is NOT sinus related, rubbing peppermint into your temples at the first sign of oncoming discomfort can be super helpful before the pain escalates!

For stress related headaches, I apply Stress Away to the painful area, including the neck and shoulders.  Then I follow with Peppermint.

Another option is first applying PanAway or Deep Relief.  Those might even work on their own, but Peppermint will drive either of them in quicker and intensify the effects of them!

Digestion!

Peppermint can naturally support the digestive system and can help with pretty much any stomach issue you might be having, including occasional heartburn/indigestion.

Simply inhaling peppermint from the bottle or after rubbing it between your hands can ease nausea.

For any stomach ache due to slow digestion, constipation, or cramps, rub some peppermint directly onto your stomach with a carrier oil!

Put a drop in your GLASS of water for any type of upset stomach!

And don't forget to apply to the feet.  It's a great way to absorb the oils quickly, and applying them to the Vita Flex Points can assist specific areas of the body!

Supports the Lungs, Sinuses, and Nasal Functions

When you're in some serious need of lung, sinus, or nasal support (ya know....when you have the "crud"), rub some peppermint onto your chest and back with a carrier oil.

You also want to inhale the peppermint by cupping your hands over your mouth and inhaling.  This can really assist healthy lung function!

Make sure to put it in the diffuser as well!

WAKE UP!

Peppermint is energizing!  It can give you a little "pick-me-up" when you can't snap out of a mental fog.

When you need that boost, just put a couple drops in your hands, rub them together and cup them over your face.

Breath deeply for several breaths...making sure to take big inhales and exhales.

Also, putting a drop under your tongue will heighten your senses for sure!

Diffusing it is a great option in this case as well.

Freshen your Breath!

This is a no-brainer.  If you have bad breath and don't feel like popping a piece of gum in your mouth, just put a drop of peppermint under your tongue.  People will smell your minty breath from a mile away!

Boost your metabolism!

Peppermint has the ability to stimulate your metabolism, especially when combined with lemon essential oil.

You can drop a couple pounds by taking a capsule of Peppermint and Lemon essential oils every morning!  I follow this with a glass of Lemon water.  (watch out...if you've never done this before, stay close to a restroom the first day)

Add for FLAVOR!

I simply love peppermint flavor.  I love it combine with chocolate, whether hot or cold!  I also love mint tea!

So you can use Peppermint essential oil anytime you might want a mint flavor.

Add a drop to your tea or coffee or hot cocoa!  (If a whole drop is too much, stick a tooth pick into the dropper cap and then swirl it into your drink.  It'll be the perfect amount!)

Add a drop to your tea for a fresh minty taste :)

Add a drop to chocolate candy, brownies, cookies, or other sweet treat you might be whipping up.

Use in DIY products!

Use peppermint in your homemade lotions, creams, or other toiletry products!

It would make a very invigorating shampoo (go easy, less is more!)

It would be lovely combined with a citrus oil like Orange in a body butter or lotion bar!

How NOT to use Peppermint?

Eye Cream :)

Again.  Please keep Peppermint essential oil AWAY FROM YOUR EYES!

All recommendations here are for Young Living Essential Oils ONLY!  If you'd like to know more about them, make sure to check out my other blog posts or comment below and I'd love to share :)

How We Use Thieves Essential Oil

In November I wrote a post about how we use essential oils on a daily basis in our home (read it here).  I said I'd be starting a series addressing each oil that comes in Young Living's Premium Starer Kit so you can better understand the value in it!

After a handful of other posts, I'm getting back on track :)

I'll start the series with one of my very favorite (I'm sure I'll use that term often) oils, which is their Thieves blend.

Thieves is just awesome.

It's a blend of
Clove
Lemon
Cinnamon
Eucalyptus Radiata
and Rosemary essential oils

Its name is derived from an old tale from the 15th century.  The story goes that a group of thieves covered themselves in a blend of the above ingredients to protect themselves from disease...while they robbed the graves of plague victims!  They were said to have been caught, and to lessen their punishment, they shared the recipe that protected them from disease!

So is this story true?  Many believe that it is!

Regardless, the blend that Young Living calls Thieves is highly supportive of the immune system!

There are several resources that list literally hundreds of ways that one can utilize Thieves!

I'll share the many ways that our family uses it and other options that you can use in your home as well!

  • -Rub it on the feet of all the family daily to maintain a healthy immune system
  • -When needing a serious boost to our systems, apply to the feet several times/day
  • -Dilute with coconut oil or other carrier oil and rub into the spine multiple times/day when immune system might be compromised
  • -Put in a capsule with a carrier oil and take internally.  If you have not taken essential oils internally, start with only 1-2 drops and work your way up.  We take several at a time now.  When our health is compromised, we usually combine Thieves, Oregano, Frankincense and Lemon in a capsule and take 3 times/day.
  • -Oh, DUH! I almost forgot!  Put a drop or two of Thieves with a drop of Lemon in a shot of water.  Gargle that and it can seriously help a sore throat!!

Don't forget my post about boosting the immune system with essential oils!

-Put a few drops of Thieves in a small glass spray bottle and fill with water.  Use this to safely sanitize and clean any surface!
-Make your own hand sanitizer!  There's a recipe here
-Put a couple drops in your laundry!  Give it a germ-fighting boost!
-Apply diluted Thieves on location with a hot compress to areas that need extra support (urinary, kindey support, etc).
-Thieves (diluted) can also be applied to the throat at the onset of soreness!
-Apply a drop to a canker sore or cold sore at the very onset!  It will probably sting, but others have claimed it stops the sore in its tracks!
-Use a drop when you "oil pull".  If you don't know what that is, you can read about it here.

-Diffuse, diffuse, diffuse!  Put Thieves in your diffuser (this is the one that we have and comes in your kit) and enjoy the many benefits of having Thieves all throughout your home!
    1. Make your house smell amazing
    2. This proprietary essential oil blend was university tested for its cleansing abilities.
    3. For those that are in the room, inhaling the diffused oil helps to support the immune system as well!

So, diffuse Thieves for 30min or so each day, and when ickies are in the air, diffuse more!!!
If you only have one diffuser (like me), then move the diffuser to the different rooms in the home.

Young Living has an amazing line of Thieves products!!!
You can check them out here.  We use the Thieves hand soap at home and love it!!!  It's so empowering knowing that I have no need to be concerned about the ingredients in the soap my kids put on their hands, which go in their mouths and sometimes in their food!  It's safe, effective, and smells great!

I think I've listed all the ways that WE use Thieves....share with us how YOU use it!

And remember, if you want to try Thieves, let me know!  I can set you up!
But if you are ready to get the full value of a starter kit and getting your oils at wholesale cost, read this post and contact me with any questions!
